Within the Year

Fortune cookies are fun, though I don't put much stock into what they say.
But for this one - I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Optimism Breeds Serendipity

Earlier this week I finally applied to teach in a space that someone (that works there) had been encouraging me to rent for a while. For over six months this had been discussed and planned while I was constantly assured it would be no problem. So I filled out the application... to end up being rejected. It was a space in a non-profit that they rent out to the community... except apparently to me. They gave me a handful of reasons for denying my request, but all of those reasons turned out to be either wrong or lies. I'm not going to speculate or dwell on which is the case. This is not the first time this particular company has rejected my teaching, but it is certainly the last. I'm not really a glutton for punishment. I promise.

Rejection sucks! But that doesn't mean we should allow someone else's lack of confidence in us to become our own. We can choose to remain stuck in an eternal pity party or we can shake the sad out of our hair and make this an opportunity to focus on being our best selves.

Upon learning that I had been DENIED - I gave myself some time to pout and some time to be angry and fantasize about throwing bricks through people's windows. But then... I reminded myself that sitting there, feeling rejected, disapproved of, and stuck... maybe even lost... wasn't going to help me. Apparently, this company is not part of my path. I looked around... vaguely looking for more of what makes me happy... more of what serves my life purpose... something to further my journey down my true path. Right away I stumbled across Sianna Sherman's Rock the Bhakti Tour workshop in Portland... two weeks from now. Since I won't be teaching, I'll be free to skip over to Portland for three days to workshop it up, play, and study Anusara Yoga. Yay! Bonus: It's doubling as a 29th Birthday Gift. Serendipitous? Kind of. A Sign? Maybe - Either way, I'm psyched!

Screw the path I thought I wanted to take... this one shines much brighter. I mean, it's just paved with awesome and opportunity.

Building a Vision

I mentioned yesterday that I don't "do" new years resolutions, but I definitely still "recognize" the New Year. I have my own little rituals and I definitely put a little extra thought into the things I do to commence the beginning of a year.

One thing that isn't really a New Year thing for me, but this year just happened to take place around New Years - is the creation of my Inspiration Board. This is simply a giant corkboard with pictures and words to act as reminders of things I want to accomplish, states of mind I want to achieve, and people who inspire me. It also holds the occasional "random thing I liked". I've been keeping an Inspiration Board for years and just recently re-decorated it. Something I do when I get very "blah" about looking at it - however often that may occur (not very often). Here's a picture by picture of the process.

Take the old board off the wall.

Dismantle it. Separate into piles of Recyclables, Keepers, and Maybes.

Get comfortable - this will take a while. All afternoon.
Grab a drink, some scissors, and a pile of old magazines.

Chop out pictures and words of everything you see that really interests/inspires you. A lot of these won't even make it into the final board - but you'll want choices to work with. Get creative with shapes, colors, etc. Make sure you don't chop out chunks of articles you still want to read or other pictures you like better.

When you start placing pics - put the biggest/most important things first. That way the things you really care about don't get forgotten and you can cover up the edges of giant pics with other stuff - and frame things accordingly. I use clear push pins, but initially I lay everything out flat without them so I can rearrange for an hour without filling everything with holes.

Once you're pretty happy with the layout - push pin away. Make sure you use enough push pins in the right places to avoid pics curling up, falling down, or shifting and covering up something else.

Once you're happy - look everything over twice - make sure you didn't miss anything.
I always find a couple pics with no push pins.

Keep Looking.

Everything in place? Everything looking good?

Stick it back on the wall and admire your work.

New Year, New Goals

I did a lot of stuff in 2010. Since I was doing significantly less teaching than I'd like (none to be exact - none that paid anyway)... I had some time to do other stuff. I don't really DO new years resolutions - but I will spare you the speech on that today. I do however, make goals. All the time I make goals and plans and I make things happen.

February 4th is my birthday - last year I turned 28 - it seemed like a good time to make a list of "30 Things Before 30". That gave me plenty of time, I thought, to accomplish 30 things I've always wanted to do. Two years is enough time to put some bigger things on the list without it seeming entirely unreasonable, and plenty of time to get a bunch of little stuff done. Lots of little things that are super easy - that I could've done on any old day, but just never had. In fact, that list is what made me make this new blog. To put my face/name as a yoga teacher - out there. As a teacher - this blog will be my home base. A place for people and my students to find me. That's the point anyway.

Some other things I accomplished last year - some from the list, some not.
  • Contributed to Elephant Journal
  • Got a library card - and used it! - for a while
  • Focused on having a daily meditation practice
  • Donated away many boxes of stuff we had just sitting around since moving here.
  • Became ordained so I can officiate weddings
  • Put together an herb garden
  • Cleansed my life of toxic people that made me feel like shit - that hated when I stood up for myself.
  • Learned to Spin Poi
  • Really learned to Hula Hoop - with Tricks ♥
  • Went to Wanderlust, took classes with amazing teachers, and met some awesome famous yogis
  • Hosted a holiday dinner where everything was made from scratch
  • Rode a horse by myself for the first time ever
  • Went to concerts
  • Took a real road trip
  • Went to Vegas
  • Visited Meteor Crater in Arizona - cooler than it sounds
  • Saw the winter solstice full moon lunar eclipse
  • Saw the Geminids meteor shower
  • Submitted photos to a yoga clothing company that got accepted to be on their website (not up yet) - and got paid in more clothes.
  • Got my foot to my head in Eka Pada Raja Kapotasana (something I had always dreamed of doing, but never thought would actually happen)
  • Got my foot to my head in a Hanumanasana Variation
  • Started doing forearm stands and handstands away from the wall
As far as accomplishing some things I always wanted to do - I notice that it helped to actually write down what I wanted to do. Make a list - and put it somewhere so I look at it everyday. So I am ALWAYS asking myself - What can I do today to make something on that list happen?

Today - make your own list if you feel so inclined - and we can make 2011 the "most lived" year we've ever had.

Book Review: Tales from the Yoga Studio

I received an email a while back asking if I'd like to review this book - and jumped at the chance. Tales from the Yoga Studio seemed exactly like the type of happy colors, bright stories, fictional yoga book I seek out.

When the book arrived I immediately sat down to read it - almost in one sitting. I've mentioned before that I don't generally do much reading because it makes me sleepy. In my determination to read and enjoy this book - if I got sleepy, I didn't notice. The book is broken into bite sized pieces - perfect for a non-reader like me, or a busy yoga mom. It's the first in a series by Rain Mitchell about five women "who flock to yoga at turning points in their lives and find the gift of lasting friendship". - Penguin.com

To quote more from the publisher's page:

"The yoga studio is where daily cares are set aside, mats are unfurled, and physical exertion leads to well-being, renewal, and friendship. An aggressively expanding chain of Los Angeles yoga "experience centers," has Lee and her extraordinary teaching abilities in its sights. They woo her with a lucrative contract, a trademarked name for her classes, and a place for her handsome musician husband. But accepting the contract means abandoning the students at the homey studio Lee runs in L.A.'s Silver Lake district- and leaving behind four women whose friendships are suddenly more important to her than retirement benefits and a salary increase."

Everyone seems to love this book. I wanted desperately to love this book.

Tales from the Yoga Studio hits on a lot of familiar life issues between mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, studio owners and students which made the characters seem fractured yet endearing and well meaning. The focus on the Kula (Community of the Heart) these five women want so badly to save is relatable to anyone who has ever belonged to a resident studio. The stock characters recognizable in most any class in America: the unprofessional studio owner barely making ends meet, the dancer, the stress junkie, the reformed bad girl, the guy that goes commando, and the uncertain newbie - we've all seen them. This allows you to be drawn into the story - like you already know the characters.

To me, the book brings to mind "Desperate Housewives" in that it showcases the cracks underneath the seemingly perfect exterior of the people in the story. I felt the drama was a little too overdone. The pace of the story seemed like it was all drama with little to keep it grounded enough to avoid a soap opera feel. I think it's a bad sign that the only character that seems to have her head on straight is Katherine, the former junkie. Mitchell lends too much space to skewering the more redonkulous douche bags of the yoga scene and not enough time focusing on the characters actually enjoying the yoga that has deeply affected their lives. At times it seems like this book is meant to point and laugh at the yoga community more than it is meant to make you want to be a part of it.

My feelings about this book - the story and the writing - went back and forth. I had waves of enjoyment and waves of irritation. Sometimes I was laughing with the characters, but other times I was left cringing at redundant filler information.

For me, this book gets a solid 2 out of 5 stars. ♥♥
